There are a wide variety of factors that help determine when a launch window will be, e.g. type of rocket and spacecraft, trajectory, final destination, and very frequently a driving factor is solar needs, since many spacecraft rely on solar panels for power, and others need to avoid as much light interference as they can to take the clearest pictures and measurements.
Space missions are often to some other body in space, whether celestial or one of our own. If a payload has to arrive at a specific point at a specific time, and we want to make the most of our fuel, we can calculate when the optimal launch times will be and launch at the shortest point int the orbital ellipses. Using Mars as an example, the minimum distance from the Earth to Mars is about 54.6 million kilometers. The farthest apart they can be is about 401 million km, and the average distance is about 225 million km. That’s a huge difference!
Missions are calculated and planned very carefully. Missing the optimal launch window and being required to divert trajectory could affect the entire status of the mission. There might not be enough fuel to reach the destination now and collision avoidance is its own tricky dance. When things are moving that fast even a seemingly trivial amount of time like seconds, can have a large impact.”
