A bristlecone tree lives in harsh conditions with temperatures well below freezing, a short growing season, and high winds. There are some 2,500-year-old trees near Windy Ridge Bristlecone Pine Scenic Area,South Park and Alma in Colorado. Even in brutal winds and harsh winters, they cling to rocky soils around 7,000-12,000 feet above sea level.
