Description
Stargazing in New Zealand
3 sleepless nights and thousands of photographs of the Southern Hemisphere Sky over the lake Wakatipu toward The Remarkable Mountain Range
The Remarkables are a mountain range and skifield in Otago in the South Island of New Zealand. Located on the southeastern shore of Lake Wakatipu, the range lives up to its name by rising sharply to create an impressive backdrop for the waters. The range is clearly visible from the nearby town of Queenstown.
Southern hemisphere skies offer dazzling spectacles for night viewing, some of which cannot be seen from the northern hemisphere.
Lake Wakatipu was named from the original Māori word Whakatipu wai-māori. Legend says that the lake bed was formed when a giant demon, Matau was burned while sleeping. Longest lake in the country. The water is so clear, it is like blue glass. It is incredibly inviting for all types of water sports. Queenstown is situated on the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu, the third largest lake by surface area in New Zealand. It is at a relatively low altitude for a ski and snowboarding centre at 310 metres above sea level on the shores of the lake, but is nestled among mountains.
